  • Context: In 586 BCE, Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and took the people of Judah into captivity (2 Kings 25, 2 Chronicles 36). Edom (descendants of Esau) gloated over the destruction of their rival nation. Edom is often identified with Petra (high, rocky terrain).

  • Obadiah 3-4 – The cause of Edom’s downfall: pride and a false sense of security.

  • Obadiah 12-14 – Eight reasons for Edom’s punishment (mark the eight “should not have” statements).

  • Obadiah 15 – Verse 15 marks the transition between judgment on Edom and the judgment on all nations.
